Goal Setting
“You need a plan to build a house. To build a life, it is even more important to have a plan or goal.” – Zig Ziglar
So why should I set goals?
1) Goals give you something to aim for. Basically it's like you are involved in archery. You know that you want to get a bullseye on the target. Setting goals gives you a purpose for doing things.
2) Goals builds motivation, confidence, desire, and persistence. If we want to hit that bullseye, we will continue to practice until we can get it. Once we get closer to the center, our confidence builds as does our desire.
3) Goals provide the roadmap to success. This map guides us from where we are today to where we want to be later.
Think about this speech class. What is one goal you have for the first speech? Remember to be specific; I don't want to pass the class. This is a weak goal. Dig deep into what worries you may have. Use these to guide you in your goal setting. Complete the chart for each goal.
Mrs. DeVore's Goal for English
1. My goal is to read at least 10 minutes each day to increase my knowledge and share my enthusiasm with others. Obviously the time is set at a minimum of 10 minutes which is an obvious measurement, but I can also measure this by the conversations I have with my colleagues as well as my students. I hope to join the teacher book club that will begin sometime this school year which will allow me to grow in professional reading. These teachers will help push me to think about other ideas with teaching and helping students. Though I feel this goal could be difficult on nights where I have multiple essays, blogs, and projects to grade, I know that it is a betterment to myself so it is worthy. I will try this for one semester.

My goal for this speech is to be able to have a lot of eye contact. I need to practice in front of someone and give them some eye contact. I know that I have accomplished this goal when I get a good grade on this speech. Derek S.
ReplyDeleteMy goal is to have good eye contact. I always look at my paper and never look at everyone else like I am suppose to do. When I know I have completed this goal I will be done with my presentation.

Deletemy goal is to get a B at the lowest grade on this speech. I am going to accomplish this by practicing it and when I give it I will make eye contact with the audience and know where i'm going with it and not get off track. I will know if I have reached this goal by when I look online at my grades.

ReplyDeleteMy goal for this first speech is to present it with confidence. Obviously I know the facts, because I know myself, so I should be able to easily share my speech. I want to be able to share it thoroughly, not rushed and not mumbled, but so everyone can understand all the things I list about me. At the end of my speech I should be able to think that everyone in the room knows who I am and what I like/like to do.
My goal is to be confident and calm during my speech. I will go about accomplishing this goal by practicing it A LOT. This will help me be more sure about what I'm saying. Now it's just remembering to KEEP CALM. I always get nervous in front of people. I'm a writer...not a speaker, but I'll work on that. ~Mikaela R
ReplyDeleteI would like to make good eye contact with the class. To not make so many mistakes when I am in front of the class. Try not to fill in the empty air with the um and like. Michael M
ReplyDeleteMy goal for this first speech is to be able to deliver a good speech and not pause or say um. I want to have a good speech along with having a strong enthusiastic voice while doing it. I will give it my best and hope it was good enough. In the end I'll know i did it when I sit down and I'll just know. M. Lansing
ReplyDeleteMy goal is to make good eye contact with people and be fluent throughout my speech. I need to go through my speech multiple times to know what to say and when to say. I need to know when I have a chance to look up and make eye contact. -Dylan S.
ReplyDeleteMy goal for this speech is to go above and beyond. I want to be sure I don't use words like "um, like, and uh." In order to accomplish this goal I will have to practice prior to giving the speech. I will have to know what I want to say without having it written in front of me. I will know I have accomplished this goal if I get a good grade, feel like I know what I'm saying, and maybe get a positive comment about not saying those words.

I want other people to relate to me. I will show them that I am just like every one else. When I show them they can relate to me and have something in common to speak to them about.
